In sports they call it being in The Zone. It's those extended moments of play when time seems to stand still and the task at hand is fluid and fun. The Zone is an easy place to be, but a hard place to find. Author Roy Palmer suggests that this state may influence a better integration of the conscious and subconscious reflex functions, which in turn, improves coordination. Many athletes reflect back after achieving a personal best and describe their performance as being "effortless."
The video below is an example of awesomeness on so many levels. Mountain biker Danny Hart is clearly in The Zone. It's a wet, treacherous course and his next closest competitor is 11.669 seconds slower than him. His effortless, fluid performance sends the announcers into a hilarious state of euphoria. All of it is a form of play that is wonderful to experience.
Here I write about toys, play and the essential skill of squeezing more fun from life. I've written two books on the toy trade including Timeless Toys (Andrews-McMeel) and the WHAM-O Super-Book. (Chronicle Books). Games that I've designed or co-developed include TriBond, Blurt!, Mad Gab, and Crazy Chins. I am featured in TOYLAND, a new documentary film on which I also served as Creative Consultant. Join the fun, seize the play!
