Problem-Solving Playthings

Some old problems can be solved with some new toys and games!

PROBLEM: The American epidemic of childhood obesity. Kids just don’t get out and move as much as they did a generation ago and today's kids are on course to to be very unhealthy adults. We've got to get them off the couch!

SOLUTION: Seige Caster Scooter from Razor. It features adjustable handle bars and it folds up for easy take-along possibilities. Comes fully-assembled, so you can ride it right out of the box. The best part? It's a hybrid vehicle! Kids can fly on it like a traditional scooter or use the patented twist deck to rock, twist and propel. Comes with a rear caster wheel that rotates 360° and allows kids to do spins and “drift” into turns in a cool new way. According to these kids on YOUTUBE, it's BEAST!

PROBLEM: Many kids learn by “doing” and by using their hands. They are not auditory learners. Unfortunately most educational games do not offer “hands-on” fun.

SOLUTION: Q-bitz from Mindware. This cool game will keep their hands busy and their brains buzzing! You race to be the first player to manipulate your 16 cubes and place them in your tray so that the pattern matches the pattern on the Q-bitz card. Be first and collect the card. Collect the most cards and win the game! This is a very high quality game with 64 wooden cubes (with a printed pattern on each side), four wooden trays and 120 Q-bitz puzzle cards with patterns that range in difficulty level.

PROBLEM: Kids have the wrong priorities. But how do you teach them what matters most without "lecturing" them?

SOLUTION: Oh, Really! from Find It Games. Opinions count as you try to guess how your friends and family really feel about what matters most. Players rank 5 random items based on their own priorities. There are three ways to play, but the most popular is the partner game, where you pair up try and prioritize 5 items and watch more than your opponents. Comes with 200 items to rank and blank cards so you can add your own. Just when you think you’ve got your friends and family figured out, someone ranks “Make-up” over “Maturity” and you exclaim, “Oh Really!?”

PROBLEM: We've got too many toys scattered all over the place!” (Good problem to have, but try stepping on that Lego brick with bare feet in the middle of the night)

SOLUTION: ZipBin playmats/toy boxes from Neat-Oh! International. Playmats that zip up to form storage bins and backpacks in which kids can keep their collections and tote their toys! Why didn’t I think of that? Kids love ZipBin because of the cool playscapes and the endless play possibilities. Parents love ZipBin because it's storage with style!
